Compare continuous and binary baseline covariates with explicit standardization denominators. All default values are fictional.
Calculation results
Continuous difference: 5; standardized difference: 0.5.
Binary difference: 0.1; standardized difference: 0.210819.
Assumptions and limits
Continuous SMD divides the mean difference by sqrt((SD1²+SD0²)/2). Binary SMD divides the proportion difference by sqrt((p1(1−p1)+p0(1−p0))/2). Enter two separate covariates. Both denominators must be positive. This is descriptive baseline balance, not a treatment effect or hypothesis test. Keep the standardization reference fixed when comparing adjusted and unadjusted samples; do not use changing weighted SDs as evidence of improvement. Small SMDs do not establish exchangeability or remove unmeasured confounding.
