Center Predictors to Make Interaction Coefficients Interpretable
Identify the reference value
In a model containing an interaction, a main-effect coefficient is conditional on the interacting variable’s reference value. If that value is zero and zero is scientifically implausible, the coefficient may answer an unhelpful question. Centering can move the reference to a meaningful value while preserving the represented model when all corresponding terms are retained.
The Patsy stateful-transform documentation explains why transformations used for prediction must retain their fitted state. A centering constant belongs to the model specification and must not be recomputed independently for every prediction dataset.
Choose and record the center
Use a clinically meaningful fixed value or a declared training-sample summary. Record units and whether centering occurs before other transformations. For interactions, retain the necessary lower-order terms unless a scientifically justified constrained model specifies otherwise.
Centering is not a substitute for addressing confounding or inadequate functional form. It can change coefficient interpretation and numerical conditioning, but it does not create causal identification or remove genuine uncertainty.
Re-express a hypothetical model
Suppose the model is y = 5 + 2A + 0.1x + 0.3Ax, where A is zero or one. The A coefficient of 2 describes its contrast at x = 0. Define z = x − 10. Substituting x = z + 10 gives y = 6 + 5A + 0.1z + 0.3Az.
The A contrast is now 5 at x = 10, while the interaction coefficient remains 0.3. For A = 1 and x = 12, the original equation gives 11.8; the centered equation with z = 2 gives the same 11.8. Different main-effect coefficients do not imply different fitted predictions.
Verify the exported interpretation
Compare predictions from the original and centered parameterizations on several synthetic rows. Preserve the covariance transformation if you manually re-express coefficients and intervals; changing only point estimates is insufficient for inference.
Report the centering value in the methods and table footnotes so readers know what each conditional coefficient means. When presenting results, meaningful contrasts or predicted values may be clearer than isolated interaction coefficients. The final record should show both the reason for moving the reference point and evidence that the implemented transformation preserves the intended model.
