Evidence Synthesis

Trace a Correction Back to the Extracted Result

Read the notice and the original together

When a paper has a linked correction, open the original article, the notice, and the current publisher version. Record their identifiers separately. NLM uses different relationships for errata, retractions, expressions of concern, and corrected republications. Preserve the stated relationship and publication date so a later reviewer can reconstruct the publication history.

Find the exact passage or table addressed by the notice. Enter the original value, corrected value, units, denominator, and location in an amendment row. Check supplementary material when the notice identifies a linked file. Some notices change authorship or formatting and have no effect on an extracted outcome. Record that determination with the reason.

Follow a hypothetical change downstream

An invented notice changes the numerator in one table from 18 to 16 while the denominator stays 80. The extracted proportion changes from 22.5% to 20.0%, a decrease of 2.5 percentage points. Search the extraction sheet, analysis inputs, figures, and narrative for all uses of that outcome. A rounded percentage alone may conceal a stale numerator.

Save a fresh analysis result with the notice date and the affected study key. Have a second reviewer trace the amended cell to the result reported in the manuscript. Preserve the earlier extraction in the audit history so the change remains explainable after the review is updated.
