Write Figure Descriptions That Preserve the Scientific Message

Identify the figure’s purpose

An accessible description should convey the information the figure contributes, not merely say chart or graph. Start with the plot type, variables, relevant comparison and main visible pattern. Distinguish an observed pattern from a causal or clinical conclusion that the image alone cannot establish.

The W3C guidance for complex images recommends short alternatives combined with longer descriptions where needed. A dense scientific figure may require nearby explanatory text or a data table rather than an excessively long image alternative.

Preserve the essential context

Include units, time horizon, group definitions and uncertainty meaning when they are necessary to interpret the pattern. Mention important scale features such as a logarithmic axis or a truncated range. Do not rely on color names alone to identify groups; use their labels.

For a multi-panel figure, describe each panel’s role and the relationship between panels. If exact values are available in a companion table, direct readers to it rather than attempting to list hundreds of points in a single sentence.

Describe a hypothetical interval plot

Imagine two fictional estimates: group A has mean 10 with interval [8, 12], and group B has mean 13 with interval [10, 16]. A concise description could state that the plot compares two group means, with B higher in the displayed sample and overlapping intervals, and identify the interval type in adjacent text.

It should not claim that B is significantly better merely because its point is higher, nor claim no difference because the intervals overlap. If the scientific question concerns a between-group contrast, include that contrast and its uncertainty elsewhere rather than asking the description to infer it visually.

Check the description against the final figure

Review after rendering because labels, limits or data may change during revision. Verify that every stated value is present in the plotted source data and that hypothetical illustrations are labeled as such. Remove decorative details that distract from the scientific information unless those details encode meaning.

Test whether the description and supporting table allow a reader to understand the figure without seeing it. Also check that visible captions do not contradict the alternative text. The final description should make the same evidence available through another route, preserving both the figure’s useful message and its limits.
