Registered Report Preparation

Prepare a methods-first journal submission.

Develop a Registered Report submission plan and Stage 1 materials for a suitable journal, with eligibility and timing assessed first.

Who this helps

For investigators planning a study or eligible secondary analysis who want methodological peer review through a participating journal’s Registered Report process.

What you receive

Journal and timing assessment
Check the selected journal’s current format, project eligibility, and the stage at which results or data have been examined.
Stage 1 preparation
Support for the rationale, hypotheses, methods, planned analyses, and outcome-neutral quality checks required by the agreed journal.
Reviewer revision support
A defined allowance for responses and revisions to methodological comments, if included in the quotation.
Stage 2 planning notes
A record of what must be retained and reported to compare the completed study with the accepted plan.

Scope to agree before work starts

The journal decides eligibility and in-principle acceptance. The format is not available for every study or journal, and acceptance cannot be guaranteed. Already observed outcomes must be disclosed; a retrospective analysis cannot be described as prospectively planned. Stage 2 submission is separate unless quoted.

Questions about this service

Is this the same as registering a protocol?

No. Protocol registration records a plan. Registered Reports involve a journal’s staged peer-review and acceptance process; requirements vary by journal.

Can an existing dataset be eligible?

Some journals support secondary-data Registered Reports under specified conditions. We assess the journal’s current rules and what the investigators have already seen.
