Evidence Synthesis

Link Grant Numbers to Their Stated Recipients

Keep the award context intact

Read the entire funding statement before splitting it into fields. The same article can describe several awards, each with its own funding source, identifier, and recipient. Inspect the structure of the funding group in the article XML and verify the interpretation against the rendered statement. Save the scope of each award group when it is provided.

A flat list of funders followed by a flat list of grants can produce spurious combinations. Retain a grant's issuer with the grant string and preserve any punctuation or leading zeros. When the recipient appears only as initials, compare the author list and surrounding text. Leave ambiguous attribution open unless the source resolves it.

Inspect a hypothetical funding statement

A paper credits Agency A with awards 01 and 02 and Agency B with award 88. The verified source contains three issuer–award pairs. Combining the two agencies with all three grant numbers would generate six pairs and three unsupported assignments. If the paper names a recipient for only one award, retain one identified recipient rather than copying that person onto the other two award rows.

Review the resulting pairs against the original statement one by one. Distinguish a general institutional support acknowledgement from funding of a specific study action when the article makes that distinction. This preserves the evidence needed for a grant-level analysis without extending the authors' claims.
